LEARN ABOUT METHODISM AND THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Methodism grew from the methodical and scrupulous study habits of John Wesley, his brother, Charles Wesley, and a few other students at Oxford University in England in the 1720s and 1730s. As members of the Church of England, the Wesley brothers each traveled to the colony of Georgia as missionaries to the settlers and the native inhabitants. Both returned to England and preached the value of virtuous living. Methodism spread in the colonies via circuit-riding preachers and laymen. Charles Wesley wrote thousands of hymns, many of which are in common use today among many different denominations.

EVENTS AT
LAKEWOOD UMC
Lakewood Summer Arts Faire

This annual event is held at Lakewood UMC, usually in September. Every year LSAF brings together leading local artists and the East Dallas community in a family-friendly environment where patrons can view, enjoy and purchase fine art. Each of the last six years we have had over thirty-five artists, many well-known in the Dallas arts community, and some showing their work to the public for the first time. All proceeds from Lakewood Summer Arts Faire support charities in the Dallas community. Some of the organizations that have benefitted from LSAF include The Lakewood Firehouse After School Program, Inc, The Wilkinson Center, and Methodist Children's Home.
